How to Repair an Auto Mirror

How to Repair an Auto Mirror thumbnail
Side-view mirrors attach the same way on most modern cars.

Most late model domestic and import automobiles use the same method for attaching side view auto mirrors to the door. Three studs are screwed into the side of the mirror housing and those studs extend through the door and are held in place with three mounting nuts. To replace the mirror you must disassemble the inner door panel. This is time consuming and replacement mirrors are expensive. You can repair the auto mirror by replacing the mirror lens.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the right side of the mirror lens into the mirror housing if you are replacing the driver's side mirror. Push the left side of the mirror housing into the mirror if you are replacing the passenger's side mirror. This pushes the opposite end of the mirror lens out of the mirror housing.

    • 2

Grasp the mirror lens with your hand and pull outward until the mirror lens pops off the mount inside the mirror housing. You will not damage the mirror lens or the mount inside the mirror.

    • 3

Place the new mirror lens into the mirror housing and line up the attachment brackets on the back of the lens with the mount.

    • 4

Push on the face of the mirror until the attachment brackets pop onto the mount inside the housing.
