How to File Away Important Papers in a File Cabinet
Keeping important papers safe ensures that you will have access to them when you need them. One of the best ways to do this is to file them in a file cabinet. A file cabinet not only keeps your paper organized properly, but also ensures they won't be lost or damaged from lying around. To make this system most efficient for you, it's best to file your papers in a system that is easy for you to both remember and navigate.

1
Purchase colored file folders. If you have a fairly spacious file cabinet, then purchase hanging folders that allow you to easily thumb through each one while moving others out of the way. If yours is a fairly small cabinet, then you may need to purchase basic folders that you can easily stack in the individual drawers.

2
Assign a color to each category of documents. For example, tax information might go in red folders, insurance information in blue folders. This way, if you have to pull out more than one set of papers, they are all found in the same set of colors. Moreover, when you need to purchase more folders, if you replicate each color, then at least your papers are in the same color family of folders.

3
Label the folders in a simple manner. Don't get too elaborate with folder labels, otherwise you won't easily know what each one contains. Keep it simple and direct. If you have a folder with birth certificates then label it "Birth Certificates." This is particularly important if you have numerous folders in your filing cabinet.

4
Label file cabinet drawers. Again, this makes it easy for you to search for information. For example, place all insurance (health, life and car) in a file cabinet drawer and label it "Insurance." Then each folder can be labeled with the type of insurance information it contains.

5
Make a folder that sits on top of your file cabinet to hold papers waiting to be filed. This provides a place where you can store important papers out of the way, but saves you the trouble of having to file an important document every time you get your hands on one (though that would certainly be prudent, provided you have the time).
