DIY Cord Zipper Pulls

DIY Cord Zipper Pulls thumbnail
Nylon cord is a quick, neat way to replace lost zipper pulls.

Zippers on bags, jackets and other items are often fitted with flimsy zipper pulls that break or come loose, making it difficult to use the zipper. Lost zipper pulls can be replaced with sturdy nylon cord and color coordinated to match your item. By using a nylon cord you can melt the loose ends together to form a loop, which gives you a neater look with no frayed edges and less likely to work itself loose.

Things You'll Need

  • Nylon cord, 3mm diameter - at least 7 inches per zipper
  • Scissors
  • Lighter or hand-held torch
  • Toothpick

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 7-inch (17.5 cm) length of nylon cord.

    • 2

Carefully melt the two ends of the length of cord together, with a hand-held torch or lighter, forming a loop of cord. Use a toothpick to smooth the joint before it hardens for a neater appearance. (reference 1)

    • 3

Pinch one end of the loop of cord. Push the cord partway through the eye of the zipper, creating two loops. Pull one loop through the other and tighten it to fasten the loop to the zipper.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're a cyclist or frequent pedestrian, use reflective nylon cord for zipper pulls on bags and outerwear to make you more visible at night.

  • Nylon cord is available from many hardware and camping stores.

  • Use caution when handling melted nylon cord, to prevent burns.

  • Lighters, hand-held torches, and other heat sources are potentially dangerous and should be used with care.
