Open Source File Conversion
There are a number of free open source file conversion applications available these days. They can be downloaded onto your computer, and used for converting different file formats. Some of them are specifically for image conversion while others support media files such as audio and video. Some of the open source format conversion applications include MMConvert, Automatic File Converter and WinFF.

Use MMConvert for converting multimedia file formats. Once installed on your computer, you can access it by going to "Start" > "All Programs" > "MMConvert." The file formats supported by the application include asf, wmv, wma, avi, mp3, wav, mkv, mka, ogg and ape.
From the main interface, go to "File" > "Open" and open the file that is to be converted. Then select the desired output format, and click "Convert." Depending on the file size, it will take a few minutes for the conversion process to complete.

Use Automatic File Converter to convert image file types. You can download and install it from the link in Resources below. Once downloaded, you will be able to convert the file format of an image simply by renaming it. For instance, if an image file's name is "photo12.jpg", you can right-click on it, select "Rename." Then change its name to "photo12.png" (or a different format), and the format will be converted automatically.

Download and install WinFF on your computer for converting video file formats, such as MPEG, FLV, MOV and AVI. It's compatible with various languages across multiple platforms, such as Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, XP, Vista, Ubuntu, Redhat and Debian.
When you launch the application on your PC, click the "Add" button and open the file that is to be converted. Select a file format to convert into from the "Convert to" dropdown list. Then click "Convert" and wait for the file to finish the conversion process.
