How to Create an Application File

Creating an application shortcut file in the Windows operating system is an action that can be performed directly from your desktop. An application shortcut file saves you the need to find the application's executable file on your hard drive to open a program. Instead of wading through all the directories on your hard drive in search of this all-important file, you can simply create a shortcut and then use that to open the associated program.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click on your desktop. A menu appears.

    • 2

      Click "New."

    • 3

      Click "Shortcut."

    • 4

Click "Browse" in the "New Shortcut" window and select the executable file for the application for which you're creating a shortcut icon. You need to select the actual file that launches the program from its installation directory on your computer. If you did not change the default installation location for a particular program, it will be located in the Program Files folder of your C: drive.

    • 5

Click "Next." Type a name for your new shortcut and click "Finish" to finish creating your application shortcut file.
