Prisoners in the United States can be located through online resources

Finding an inmate among the multitude of prisons can seem like a daunting task. There are thousands of facilities -- federal, state, and county -- across the country, many with prisoners of the same name. However, there are online resources that provide a route to finding specific inmates by using either their name or prisoner number. This can be used to find inmate locations, crimes and sentences, as well as contact information for the prison facilities in which they are located.

Instructions

  1. Locating a federal inmate through online resources

    • 1

Log onto the Internet and navigate to the Federal Bureau of Prisons' "Inmate Locator" website.

    • 2

Enter the inmate's prisoner ID number or their first and last name in the Federal Bureau of Prisons' "Inmate Locator" page and select "Search."

    • 3

Verify that the correct inmate was retrieved in the search results. Select the federal prison link next to the inmate's name.

    • 4

Select the "Contact Information" link on the Federal Prison page for contact information.

Locating a state inmate through online resources

    • 5

Log onto the Internet and navigate to a state prison "Inmate Locator" website.

    • 6

Select the state where the prisoner is incarcerated.

    • 7

Select the state inmate locator link for state prisoners, or specific county inmate locator links for county incarcerations.

    • 8

Enter the inmate's prisoner number, or their first and last name, and select "Search." Details will be returned about the location of the inmate and contact details of the state or county facility.
