Access or go to the Department of Motor Vehicle Registration in the state where the vehicle once operated. Create a record lookup unit account or request the retired vehicle title history form.
You can also do a vehicle research history online through the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System website. Click on "Research Vehicle History" and scroll down to the "Consumer Access" link to conduct your title search.

Fill out the requested information for the retired vehicle title record request form you obtained at the DMV or complete the online National Motor Vehicle Title Information System form. Necessary information includes license plate number, vehicle identification number or registration number. Make sure to obtain the right form before paying the fee for it.
