How to Know the Map ID for Garmin

Garmin GPS units can help you find businesses, restaurants and other points of interest. Each map file installed on the unit has its own map ID, which is stored on the gmapsupp.img file. You can find the map ID for a Garmin map file using a program called Garmin Map ID Finder, developed by MrGneissGuy.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the Garmin GPS unit to your computer via the USB cable that came with it.

    • 2

Download the Garmin Map ID Finder program online (See Resources). Extract the zip file to your desktop, and double-click on the program to run it.

    • 3

Select the gmapsupp.img file in the interface screen and click "Find Code." The program will locate the Map ID.

Tips & Warnings

  • Store map files on your computer so you can re-install any you may accidentally delete.

  • The Garmin Map ID Finder program only works with the Windows operating system.
