1
Perform a safety check of the forklift before operating Conduct a pre-shift inspection of the forklift. A pre-shift inspection checks various parts of the machine. Aspects of the forklift that should be checked before using includes the following:
-Level of fuel and the fuel gauge
-Level of oil
-Level of hydraulic oil
-Level of power shift oil
-Level of battery water
-Visible signs of corrosion on the battery
-Level of coolant water
-Visible problems with the fan belt
-Proper operation of the service and parking brakes
-Proper functioning of the lights including the headlights, warning lights, taillights and turning lights
-Proper horn function
-Any visible problems with the hoist mechanism, cotters, nuts and chain bearings
-Level of lube for the hoist mechanism
-Proper steering function
-Proper hydraulic control function
-Proper tire function including tire inflation
-Any visible leaks from fuel, exhaust or oil

2
Secure a load properly before transport. Set the load in the middle of the forklift hoist mechanism so the weight of the load is evenly distributed. Use the straps to tightly secure the load to the forklift. Avoid stacking the load too high, as this makes it hard for the operator to see ahead. The load is more likely to tip over if it is too high.

3
Take a physical walk along the route the forklift will be traveling. Look for any steep inclines, large objects or other obstacles that could be hazardous. Remove any large visible objects that are in the path of the forklift.
-
4
Follow the direction of the supervisor. A supervisor overseas a forklift operator, ensuring that the load is transported safely. The supervisor can warn the forklift operator of any impending obstacles that can be a danger.
-
5
Be aware of other vehicles or heavy machinery in the area. Depending on where the forklift is, traffic may be present and can be a danger.
-
6
Turn off the forklift when you reach your destination. Before turning off the machine, be sure to lower the forklift's hoist mechanism so the load can be unloaded easily. Ensure that the parking brake is set and secure before unloading.
