How to Get Better Gas Mileage on a 1998 Dodge RAM Truck
Increasing your gas mileage is important if you own a 1998 Dodge RAM. Dodge RAMs are not known for getting high gas mileage. But you can take precautions to ensure you are getting the most mileage possible. Even just gaining a few miles per gallon can save you money in the long run. Some simple techniques can help you get the most out of your 1998 RAM.

1
Accelerate and brake slowly when driving your RAM. You burn more gas if you brake or accelerate quickly. Avoid speeding to increase your gas mileage as well. A lot of fast driving over long periods of time causes you to use more gas than if you drive the speed limit, or just below it.

2
Check your tire pressure often. Tires that are a few pounds low of air can cause pull in your driving. This causes your Dodge to use more gas to move. Add air when needed to your tires with an air compressor. The optimum amount of air in your tires is posted inside the driver's side door near the floor panel.

3
Avoid letting your truck idle for long periods of time. This is just a waste of gas since you get no mileage out of idling in place. Bigger vehicles, like Dodge RAMs, burn a lot more gas than a regular car when idling. So avoid it as much as possible.

4
Reduce the amount of weight you carry in your RAM's truck bed. Extra weight can slow your truck down because more gas is needed to haul the load. Only haul heavy loads when necessary and not for long periods of time.

5
Perform regular engine maintenance. Change the oil every 3,000 miles or at least every three months to keep the engine clean. Check your coolant, and other fluids to make sure they are at their maximum levels. Replace any bad sensors as soon as they become faulty. A bad oxygen sensor can decrease your gas mileage by around 40 percent alone. Check air filters and hoses for clogs or leaks. Replace any damaged hoses immediately.
