How to Duct Tape Windows

How to Duct Tape Windows thumbnail
Taping windows will help during a storm.

When preparing your home for a hurricane, it's important to not overlook the house's windows. Windows can become hazardous during a heavy storm if the glass should shatter or a windswept item crashes through the window, sending shards of glass all over the place. You can stop this from happening by duct-taping your windows, which will keep any broken pieces of glass stuck to the tape in the event the window breaks. This process also works well if you are moving and need to pack a window pane, or for taping glass top tables.

Instructions

    • 1

Dust down the window you're taping to remove dirt and debris. A smooth and clean window will hold onto the tape better.

    • 2

Spray a window cleaner onto the glass, let it sit for about 15 seconds, and then wipe the spray clean with a rag.

    • 3

Cut two strips of tape that are approximately the height of the window, and two strips that are approximately the width of the window. Apply the strips to the edge of the glass, making a frame of tape on the inner edge of the window.

    • 4

Cut two strips of tape and apply them to the glass, one horizontally and one vertically, to make a cross shape on the window.

    • 5

Cut two strips of tape and apply them diagonally to make an X shape on the glass.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use more strips of tape for larger windows.

  • Never stand near a window during a storm, even if the glass is taped.
