How to Use Tubular Wire Mesh Ribbon

Add some pizzazz to a beaded necklace with tubular wire mesh ribbon.

Tubular wire mesh ribbon is a type of ribbon used in jewelry making. Made out of copper, brass and aluminum, the ribbon comes in sizes ranging from 6 mm to 20 mm. The ribbon is three-dimensional and forms a tube when worked properly. String beads through it, place wire or string through the mesh tube to create a decorative base for your necklace, or fluff the mesh ribbon to form decorative accents on the piece of jewelry you're creating.

Instructions

    • 1

String smaller-sized tubular mesh through beads or other decorative items that you would normally secure with wire or string when making jewelry. String the mesh through a large-eyed needle to get it through the beads. To secure, knot the mesh at the end of each bead. This works best with light beads that don't weigh down the mesh.

    • 2

Place a piece of stiff cord through the tubed mesh of any size. String it carefully until you have your desired length. Be careful not to tear it. Add a pendant or other decorative items onto the stringed mesh to complete your look.

    • 3

Take a piece of stiff cord and follow Step 1 as described above, without knotting in between. Then, take the cord in between the beads and fluff each section out to make it look like ruffles. This will secure the beads in between the mesh.

    • 4

Follow Step 2 and push the mesh from one end to the other into itself to form sets of ruffles. Shape these ruffles until you get your desired look. This takes a lot of wired mesh so practice first on a shorter piece.
