How to Attach a Handrail to a Fitting

Handrails along steps provide safety.

If you, a family member or a friend need assistance climbing stairs or getting out of a bathtub, adding a handrail to your shower, walkway or outdoor porch steps may help. You can install a handrail yourself and save some money. You only need a few supplies, including proper fittings, to connect the handrail to posts. Fittings can be found for various angles that match the requirements for your handrail.

Things You'll Need

• Allen wrench
• Type C50-88 fittings (or another type)

Instructions

1. Purchase your angle fittings. Type C50 fittings allow you to create a handrail at nearly any angle.

2. Secure your handrail post to the base.

3. Connect the C50-88 fitting to the top edge of the post with a screwdriver.

4. Attach the handrail to the C50-88 fitting using an Allen wrench. Let the handrail hang to the ground.

5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the opposite end of the handrail.
