How to Make My Scooter Fast

Make your scooter faster by regularly maintaining its mechanical parts.

Though you can modify your scooter in several ways to make it faster, few of those modifications are legal. Consequently, you are left with a handful of aftermarket and maintenance options that will ensure that your scooter is performing at the highest level possible. Making your scooter fast requires you to keep your scooter and its mechanical components in proper working order, as well as consider installing several aftermarket options.

Conduct Proper Maintenance

1. Ensure that both tires are properly inflated and not worn out. The easiest way to lose speed, particularly with 50 cc scooters, is to ride with an underinflated rear tire. Because all scooters operate with a rear-wheel transmission, an underinflated rear tire means there is more surface of the tire on the road, equalling more friction and a slower speed. Check your manual to see what psi your tires should be inflated to.

2. Use the right fuel. Some scooters require a high octane standard gasoline to run. Others require a gas-and-oil mix. Regardless of your scooter's fuel requirements, use only the specified fuel. Failure to do so may result in your fuel lines getting clogged, which limits the flow of fuel into your engine. This cuts your engine's performance significantly to the point of even stopping it altogether.

3. Lubricate the mechanical components of your engine on a standard schedule. Change your scooter's oil every 1,000 miles, keep the transmission belt properly lubed, and keep your brake fluid full. Failure to maintain any of these vital fluids will result in mechanical malfunction and engine underperformance.

Install Aftermarket Options

1. Install an aftermarket exhaust system on your scooter. Most factory exhaust systems become choked fairly quickly in the scooter's life, resulting in restricted air flow from the scooter. Putting in a new exhaust system will help your scooter expel exhaust fumes faster and more efficiently, allowing the engine to take in the proper amount of oxygen to ignite and work to the best of its combustion abilities.

2. Use an octane booster gas supplement whenever you fill up your scooter's gas tank. Octane boosters help your engine process the gasoline more efficiently, resulting in a faster combustion rate and higher horsepower. Some octane booster supplements are made specifically for scooters and can be purchased at your local auto parts store.

3. Put a windshield on your scooter. This will increase the scooter's aerodynamics by fanning oncoming wind out past your body, which acts as a sail, restricting the speed of the scooter significantly. Installing a windshield on your scooter has the added benefit of protecting your from bugs.
