Penn manufactures reels for fresh and saltwater fishing. Proper maintenance can minimize damage, but the reel may require repair after excessive use. Use a schematics chart to identify individual reel parts for replacement. Maintain a clean, working area where small parts will not be lost.

  1. Spinning Reels

    • 1

      Unscrew the drag-adjustment cap located on the top of the reel. Use a slotted screwdriver to remove the bail screw and the bail.

      Remove the spool housing and the spool. Use warm water to wash away debris and saltwater. Check the drag assembly for signs of corrosion. Check the springs for signs of corrosion. Replace worn springs and drag gears that are not functioning properly.

      Locate the ball bearing for the drive gear on the base of the reel. Add a drop of oil to the port located immediately above the bearing.

      Add a small drop of oil to the arm assembly and the gearing. Reassemble the reel and test-cast with a small weight that simulates a lure.

    Conventional Reels

      Remove the side plate to access the spool. Remove the spool assembly. Wash the reel housing and spool assembly in warm water to remove debris and saltwater.

      Check the exposed gears for rust and corrosion. Replace any worn gears with new gears of the same specifications.

      Check the brake system for excessive wear and corrosion. Replace the brakes and brake collars if the wear is excessive.

      Add several drops of oil to the gears and brakes. Reassemble the reel.

      Add a small weight to the line to simulate a lure. Test-cast and retrieve before using the reel for fishing.
