How do I Make a Scooter Run Fast?

How do I Make a Scooter Run Fast? thumbnail
Modified scooters can be driven at higher speeds, including highway speed.

You can make a scooter run faster by running racing fuel through the engine, which burns at a higher octane and produces more combustion. However, you will need to make some modifications to your engine cylinder to handle the fuel temperature.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench and sockets
  • Solvent
  • Shop towels
  • New washers, nuts and lock washers
  • Torque wrench (socket wrench type)
  • Racing fuel
  • New spark plugs of hotter and colder ratings

Instructions

    • 1

Use a socket wrench with the appropriately-sized socket to loosen the nuts holding your engine cylinder cap on the cylinder. Twist the socket wrench counter-clockwise on each nut, loosening each one in a criss-cross pattern rather than a square (this avoids warping the cylinder head).

    • 2

Remove the cylinder cap when loose and catch all the old washers and nuts that come off the cap and engine studs. Make sure the washers and nuts do not fall into the cylinder when removing.

    • 3

Wash the cylinder cap with a solvent, such as carburetor cleaner, and then dry it off with a shop towel. When clean, take the cylinder cap to a motorcycle or scooter shop and have them reshape the inside of the cylinder cap for higher compression. Make sure to tell them what your scooter engine size is and that you want to run racing fuel in the engine.

Pick up the cylinder cap when the cap reshaping work is finished and pay for the service. Re-install the cap onto the engine with new washers, lock washers, and nuts on each cylinder stud. Use a socket wrench to tighten each nut down in a cross-pattern over all four studs until you feel slight resistance. Switch to a torque wrench and tighten the cap in a criss-cross pattern consistent with the tightness specification for your scooter model (contact your scooter dealer for the exact pounds per square foot tightness rating).

    • 5

Pour racing fuel into your empty gas tank in your scooter and start the scooter up. Take it for a test ride at low to middle range gears and speed. Pull over and use a socket wrench to pull out the spark plug and check the color of the firing tip. Continue testing at higher speeds if it is brown. Change the spark plug to a hotter rating if the firing tip is oily black. Change the spark plug to a cooler rating if the firing tip is chalky white. Continue testing at higher speeds until satisfied.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get a ratchet-type torque wrench for tightening the cylinder cap. This type of tool is more accurate than the wobbly dial-type of torque wrench.

  • Do not try to use racing fuel in your scooter without modifying the cylinder cap. Doing so will likely cause a hotter temperature that will melt your piston and cause significant engine damage.

  • When having a scooter shop perform the reshaping of the cylinder head, make sure the mechanic tasked with the work is experienced with how to reshape or reprofile cylinder caps. Not everyone understands or knows how to do this very technical work.
