How to Fix the Check Status on a Symantec Antivirus 9

Symantec Antivirus 9 periodically causes Microsoft Windows Service Pack 2 to check the status of the antivirus in question. It falsely warns users that "Norton Antivirus Reports that It is Installed, but Its Status is Unknown," even though it is effectively active. This is the result of a dated tamper protection technique that prevents systems from determining Symantec's antivirus status. An effective solution is to completely disable the Windows Security Center feature that pertains to your computer's antivirus program.

Instructions

1. Click the balloon that states "Your Computer Might Be at Risk" from the system tray to launch the Windows Security Center properties.

2. Click the "Recommendations" option within the Virus Protection section. This field consistently shows the message "Check Status" regardless of your antivirus program's current state.

3. Enable the check box "I Have an Antivirus Program that I'll Monitor Myself." In turn, your operating system will effectively stop displaying such security warnings. Press "OK" to apply all changes.
