How to Switch Drive C to E

How to Switch Drive C to E thumbnail
By default, Windows assigns the primary system drive with the letter "C."

Windows assigns drive letters in its mapping system to make drive navigation much simpler for the user. Each drive letter organizes the contents of a drive into a particular folder labeled after the letter. For example, the root folder for drive C shows up as "C:\." Based on this hierarchy, installed programs quickly find their directories when loading components necessary for them to run. You may change the letter of a drive using "Disk Management" in your Control Panel.

Instructions

    • 1

Click your "Start" menu and click "Control Panel."

    • 2

Click "System and Security" ("System and Maintenance" in Windows Vista) and click "Administrative Tools."

    • 3

Double-click "Computer Management" and navigate to "Disk Management."

    • 4

Right-click the partition with "C" in parentheses and click "Change Drive Letter and Paths."

    • 5

      Select "C" and click "Change."

    • 6

Select "Assign the following drive letter" and choose "E" from the drop-down list.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may not change the letter of any system partition. The steps above work for computers that installed Windows on a partition labeled with a letter other than C.
