How to Secure Luggage With Straps

How to Secure Luggage With Straps thumbnail
Containing your luggage is easy with a luggage strap.

A luggage strap will provide peace of mind when traveling, whether your suitcase won't fully close, the items within are valuable to you or you have two pieces of luggage that need to be strapped together to make them easier to manage. There are many types of luggage straps to choose from, all made from tough and unbreakable webbing that clips together using the universal buckle and hook.

Instructions

  1. Securing One Piece of Luggage

    • 1

Purchase a bright luggage strap from websites such as Magellans or Brookstone to make your bag easily recognizable. There is a wide range available, including personalized straps.

    • 2

Place the strap around the middle of your shut suitcase.

    • 3

Bring the two ends together and clip it closed. Adjust it to ensure a snug fit. Made from tough and unbreakable webbing, luggage straps have durable plastic clasps, with the universal buckle and hook being simple to use.

    Securing Multiple Bags

    • 4

Purchase an Add-a-Bag luggage strap from Corporate Travel Safety or Brookstone. This type of strap is specially made to hold two bags together, extends and is fully adjustable.

    • 5

Loop the strap through the handles of both suitcases.

    • 6

Adjust to a comfortable length and snap it closed. You can now pull the handle of the bigger bag, and both bags will wheel together.

Locking Your Luggage with a TSA-Approved Luggage Strap

    • 7

Purchase a Strapsafe 100 TSA Luggage Strap, approved by the Transport Security Administration (TSA), from websites such as Corporate Travel Safety or Magellans. The strap includes a lock in the buckle and hook, and has a security window to inform you whether your luggage has undergone a search or not. U.S. luggage inspectors can unlock and relock it, avoiding the need for cutting straps to get into your luggage if it requires searching.

    • 8

Slide the strap around the bag, ensuring it goes in between the handle and the case. Clip the buckle closed and adjust the strap to ensure a snug fit.

    • 9

Press the yellow button to lock it. The baggage constrictor technology ensures the strap is immovable once the lock is set in place.

    • 10

Enter your three-digit PIN to unlock the buckle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Research your airline's luggage restrictions before you fly.

  • If you're carrying sharp objects in your luggage, ensure they are securely wrapped to avoid injury to luggage handlers.

  • If your TSA lock shows a red button -- as opposed to green -- you will know your bag has been searched. There should be an official notification clipped to your bag to tell you so. If not, take your bag to the airline's luggage claim department to ensure nothing is missing.
