How to Choose Military Housing

How to Choose Military Housing thumbnail
Choose the right home for yourself and your family when you join the military.

If you're a member of the U.S. Military, you can live on the base in military housing and have your entire housing costs covered. Each branch of the military has its own housing, but the process to select housing is the same for any service member. Your eligibility for particular housing is dependent on your family status. If you have a spouse or children, you may be able to move into a larger, stand-alone home in a military community. Single individuals are more likely to live in group housing.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate your basic allowance for housing rates before you make any decisions. You may be able to live off-base and have the entire expense covered. Your basic allowance for housing is based on your family size, pay grade and job location.

    • 2

Ask what housing you're eligible to receive. You may have to live in apartment-type barracks with other service members if you don't have any dependents. If you're married or have children, you may be eligible to live in a house on the base or you may be eligible for an increased housing allowance.

    • 3

Live on base if you don't need space from your job. Living on base will immerse you in the military from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep. You'll go to the gym, the store and social events with military members instead of with the rest of the community. Determine whether that is the right choice for you and your family.

    • 4

Ask to take a tour of the available military housing. Note the size of the available units and their location. See if you like the styles available. Talk to other families about their experience living on or off-base. Ask if living off-base is inconvenient for those who do.

    • 5

Ask what kind of inspections you'll face living in barracks-style housing. If you need more privacy or don't want your living quarters subject to a search, you should consider living off-base.
