How to Check a Master Cylinder

How to Check a Master Cylinder thumbnail
Brake fluid requires pressure to ensure the vehicle stops adequately.

Checking the master cylinder is essential to the life of the braking system. The master cylinder holds the brake fluid in the reservoir tank. When the brake pedal is pushed, the cylinder pushes the brake fluid through the brake lines to make the vehicle stop. To much or to little brake fluid can cause the brakes to malfunction. Check the fluid level regularly to ensure the level is correct.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood to access the engine compartment. Ensure the vehicle is turned off.

    • 2

Locate the master cylinder. The master cylinder is usually located against the back of the driver side of the engine compartment.

    • 3

Pull off the lid of the master cylinder by unclipping it from the top of the master cylinder. Once the lid is removed, a black rubber cover can be pulled out by hand. Some master cylinders have a cap to unscrew as opposed to a lid that clips in place.

    • 4

Verify the level of the fluid. The fluid should be in between the lines on the side of the reservoir. If the level is below the "add" mark, fill with brake fluid.

    • 5

Place the black cover back in to the master cylinder. Push the cover back on to the master cylinder and clip it in place.

    • 6

      Close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consult the owner's manual for the correct type of brake fluid to use.

  • Use caution working with brake fluid as it is highly toxic. Brake fluid is also toxic for the vehicle's paint job if it comes in direct contact.
