The ancient samurai is a well known, and often romanticized, figure of military history. While the samurai is no longer a military force, the principles and techniques of the samurai way are still studied and practiced by enthusiasts. When learning to swing a samurai sword, it is important to ensure that you are holding the sword properly, and that you are familiar and comfortable with the basic cuts in the samurai attacking style.

      Hold the blade with your wrist aligned so that if looking down your arm, your wrist and the blade of the sword form a straight line.

      Use a practice sword, often wooden without a bladed edge, to avoid potential training injuries.

    • 3

      Perform a kesa giri cut by striking down at an angle, starting at the shoulder and continuing down to the opposite hip.

    • 4

      Perform a kiriage by striking in an upward angle from the attacker's hip up through their opposite shoulder.

    • 5

      Perform a do by swinging the sword horizontally at the waist of an attacker.

    • 6

      Perform a men by cutting straight down vertically from the top of the head to the groin.

    • 7

      Perform a ski by thrusting the point of the sword at your attacker.

    • 8

      Perform a kote by swinging the sword vertically down on the attacker's wrist.
