How to Change the Faucet on a Mop Sink
Changing a faucet often is necessary if it is leaking or has becomed damaged. Sometimes the faucet may not be usable or you just want a new look. Removing an old faucet and replacing it with a new one is a fast do-it-yourself project that can increase the usefulness of a mop sink. Most big-box and hardware stores carry a variety of faucet styles but before you purchase a new faucet, consider the size of the mop bucket that goes under it, and if you want a spray nozzle. Things You'll Need
- Flashlight
- Basin wrench
- Groove jointed pliers
- Sponge
- Vinegar
- Silicone caulk
- Replacement faucet kit
- Plumbers tape
- Rag

Shut off the water under the sink or at the main valve. Open the faucet nozzles to drain any water in the supply lines. Turn on the flashlight and prop it up under the sink.

Manually disconnect the supply lines and unhook the sink plug lever. Use the basin wrench or pliers and unscrew the nuts on the underside of the faucet. Pull up on the faucet and remove the entire thing. It may be single handle or double, and may have a faceplate.

Dip the sponge in the vinegar and clean away the old hard-water deposits and dirt where the faucet used to sit. Let it dry for a few minutes. When the area is dry, put a couple of beads of silicone caulking around the area the new faucet will go. Place the new fixture on top of the sink and align the threaded posts on the nozzles into the existing holes in the sink.

Go back under the sink and wrap plumbers tape around the threads on the bottoms of the nozzles to ensure a good seal. Place the washer and nuts that came with the new unit on the threads and hand tighten. Screw them on the rest of the way with the basin wrench. Wipe around the new faucet with a rag to remove any caulking that has oozed out.

Reconnect the water lines. Turn the faucet on and check for leaks. If any exist, it usually is a matter of re-tightening the connections.
