How to Wire an RV for a Satellite Dish

A portable satellite dish enables recreational vehicle owners to watch satellite television no matter where they have traveled to. You can install the wiring that must connect the satellite receiver and the portable satellite dish so that the dish can be quickly connected once you have finished traveling for the day. A few supplies from a hardware store will be needed, along with those from a satellite supply or electronics shop. A few tools that most households (and RVs) commonly have on hand will be needed as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Coaxial cable, 50 feet
  • Stapler gun
  • "U" clamp staples
  • Coax wall plate
  • Pencil
  • Portable drill
  • 1/2-inch drill bit

Instructions

    • 1

Screw one end of a 50-foot coaxial cable into the coax input on the back of the satellite receiver that is inside the RV. Run the coaxial cable along the baseboard of the RV's walls until you reach the door. Staple the coaxial cable to the baseboard of the walls with the stapler gun.

    • 2

Go outside the RV. Stand next to the RV's door, which is closed. Place the coax wall plate to the side of the door, even with the inside floor of the RV. Draw an outline around the plate with the pencil. Remove the plate.

    • 3

Drill a hole through the center of the outline with the portable drill. Smooth out the inside edges of the hole with the side of the drill bit.

    • 4

Push the end of the coaxial cable through the hole from the inside of the RV. Screw the end of the coaxial cable into the connection on the back of the coax wall plate. Place the wall plate against the RV so that it covers the outline. Screw wood screws through the coax wall plate into the side of the RV with the Phillips screwdriver.

    • 5

Apply silicone paste around the hole on the inside of the RV. Let the paste set for 2 hours before continuing. Staple the coaxial cable on the inside of the RV where it goes against the hole with the stapler.

    • 6

Open the tripod legs of the portable satellite dish. Stand the portable satellite dish on the ground a few feet away from the RV. Screw an end of a coaxial cable into the coax output on the dish's LNB (low noise block amplifier) module. Screw the other end of the coaxial cable into the coax connector on the coax wall plate that is on the side of the RV.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can add a wall plate to the inside of the RV if you don't want the cable going through a hole.
