How to Properly Store Bottles of Wine
The proper method for storing bottles of wine is not typically a concern for the vast majority of wine connoisseurs around the world. Most wine is purchased and consumed within a short period of time, eliminating the need for elaborate or expensive storage options. Storing wine properly takes into account only a few factors with more elaborate steps determined by budget or necessity. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Select an appropriate storage location. Proper wine storage is dependent on several factors, including constant temperature, low humidity and darkness. For the best results, choose a location that is away from light, is not susceptible to extreme temperature changes and will keep the wine still. Basements or cellars are the best option, but a large pantry will also work well.
-
2
Install storage racks. Wooden racks or shelves offer the best storage solution for most situations as they can be easily installed and configured for nearly any space or shape. The racks should allow the bottles to be stored on their side and provide protection for the entire bottle.

3
Adjust the environment. Under ideal conditions, wine should be stored at 55 degrees Fahrenheit and at approximately 60 percent humidity. With short-term storage (2-3 years), these factors can fluctuate slightly without damaging the wine. For long-term storage, incorrect or inconsistent temperature and humidity can easily destroy a good bottle of wine. Cover windows or racks to eliminate exposure to light.
-
4
Install temperature and humidity gauges, if desired. While these aren't usually important for storage within a residential setting, cellars, basements and other storage locations may require closer watch.
-
5
Place wine bottles in storage racks carefully, so as not to damage the labels. If storing a wide variety of wines, consider grouping like types, regions or vintages together.

Tips & Warnings
Electric tabletop wine refrigerators are an excellent storage option for short-term storage.
Store wine near the floor as heat will naturally rise away from the bottles.
As a result of a shortage of cork, many vineyards are switching to synthetic corks or screw-tops, which don't require the bottle to be stored on its side.
For more expensive bottles, wrap in tissue paper before storage to provide better protection from light and to protect the label.
Exposure to constant sunlight will cause the wine to expand, increasing the risk of oxidation.
Wire racks are also popular, but can scratch labels when bottles are stored or removed for consumption.
