Maximizing your fuel economy in a Jeep Libery.

Gasoline prices are high and oil is limited, so it is in everyone's best interest to conserve fuel whenever possible. Although transportation is a necessity, there are ways to increase the fuel efficiency of your Jeep Liberty. If you can get a higher number of miles per gallon of gas, you will reduce you gas expense as well as your impact on oil supplies. Every little bit helps, and these simple tricks will help maximize your savings.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive conservatively. Accelerating from zero to 60 a few seconds faster isn't going to save you much time, but it will cost you considerably more gas. Accelerate and drive more slowly to reduce your Jeep's gas expenditure.

    • 2

Use your cruise control to maintain a constant speed. Accelerating burns the most gas, so maintaining an invariable speed helps reduce fuel consumption.

    • 3

Minimize idling. If you're going to be stopped for a significant length of time, turn your engine off. While idling, you're getting exactly zero miles to the gallon: not very fuel efficient.

    • 4

Keep the car properly maintained, tuned and with proper air pressure in the tires. This will squeeze out the most performance for the fuel consumed, which saves gas in the long run.

    • 5

Reduce weight by removing any non-essential items you might be storing in your Jeep Liberty. Every pound of weight requires power to move it, which is produced by burning more gas.

    • 6

Use the octane suggested in your user manual. In most cases, your Jeep Liberty will use regular unleaded, and using anything higher provides no benefit.

    • 7

Lower your rear gear ratio. A high 4.56:1 gearing is great for running your Jeep Liberty over hills and pulling heavy objects, but it burns considerably more gas. Consider a lower ratio, such as 3.73:1.

Use an anti-friction metal treatment. Four Wheeler magazine tested one such produce, Maxi Lube, by adding it to the transmission, transfer case, differentials and crank case, and saw a 1.1 mpg increase in the Jeep Liberty they tested.

Try a fuel reformulator. Four Wheeler magazine tested Ethos Fuel Reformulator in their 2005 Jeep Liberty and received a 1.6 mpg improvement in their fuel efficiency.
