How to Hook Up Trailer Lights on a 2007 Chevrolet Truck

The 2007 line of Chevrolet trucks was designed with towing in mind. The wiring of a Chevrolet truck has a wiring harness at the rear of the vehicle attached with a five-way connector. Before hooking up a trailer to the truck, check the connection on the trailer's wiring harness to see if they are compatible. If they are not, a trailer wiring adapter must be purchased to make the connection. They can be picked up at just about any automotive parts store.

Park the 2007 Chevrolet truck in front of the trailer and set the parking brake. Lift the trailer's tongue onto the trailer hitch and lock it in place with the locking mechanism. Usually this will be a large lever that needs to be pulled and pins put in place to secure it. For other types of trailer attachments, see the trailer's manual for instructions.

Set the brakes on the trailer.

    • 3

Reach underneath the truck's rear end, on the driver's side. Just behind the taillight is the trailer wiring harness. Pull the wiring harness out as far as it will reach.

Plug the trailer wiring harness into the truck's wiring harness. If the harnesses do not match, attach the trailer wiring adapter to the truck's wiring harness, then plug the trailer wiring harness into the adapter.

Get into the truck and test all of the lights. Have an assistant stand behind the trailer and make sure the turn signal lights, running lights and brake lights work.
