How to Fix a Cracked Porcelain Sink Bowl

If your old porcelain sink has crack in the bowl, first determine if it is leaking through. If so, it may be unfixable and you need to consider replacing it. If it's just a surface crack, you often can repair it with a little epoxy glue, which dries as hard as stone. Real epoxy is sold as a two-part compound that you mix together to activate it just before using it. Different brands have slightly different mixing instructions, so read them carefully. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Get the sink thoroughly clean with household cleanser. Let it completely dry.

    • 2

Open and mix the epoxy, making enough to fill the crack.

    • 3

Fill the crack with epoxy. Work it in with a toothpick if necessary. Smooth it out with a clean cloth. Clean as much of the epoxy off the surrounding area as possible with the cloth.

    • 4

Let the epoxy dry overnight. Lightly sand it with very fine aluminum-oxide sandpaper, getting it complete flat. Wipe off the dust.

    • 5

Dab paint over the dried epoxy with a small brush, completely covering it. Make sure the paint is flat and smooth. Let it dry overnight.

    • 6

Cover just the paint in polyurethane. Make it a very light, thin coat. Let it dry overnight, then add another polyurethane coat if desired. Let the final coat set for a full day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some types of epoxy come in two joined syringes to produce the mixed glue when you press down on the plunger; in this case, you won't need to mix the epoxy yourself.
