How to Replace Door Hinges Without Removing the Door
If your door hinges are old and rusty but are still secure against the door and the jamb (the wood border around the door), you can probably replace them without having to move the hinges to different locations. You'll need to find hinges that are exactly the same as the current ones, so they fit into the carved-out insets in the wood, and you'll want to use longer screws than are there now, so they're gripping new wood. By replacing the hinges one at a time, you won't have to remove the door. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Open the door to 90 degrees or more so you can access the hinge plates. Slide shims under the door, at both ends of the bottom, to secure it.
-
2
Remove all the hinge screws holding the top hinge into the door and into the jamb. Remove the hinge.
-
-
3
Set the new hinge in place, in the indentation in the wood that was left by the old hinge. The screw holes should line up exactly.
-
4
Drive 2-inch hinge screws through the hinge plate that's against the edge of the door, and into the existing holes, using a screw gun. The screws should grip firmly.
-
5
Drive 3-hinge screws through the hinge plate that's against the door jamb, into the existing holes.
-
6
Repeat the process for each of the remaining hinges, taking them off and replacing them one at a time.
