How to Install Mavic Wheels & Carbon Spokes

Mavic produces wheels for road and mountain bicycles. Specialized materials such as carbon fiber go into the design and production of many Mavic wheels. The company's carbon-fiber wheels are lightweight and have vibration-dampening qualities, making them a good choice for racers in both of the above bicycling disciplines. Installing these wheels---which come preinstalled with carbon-fiber spokes---requires aligning them into the wheel mounts and setting the brakes.

Instructions

  1. Front Wheels

    • 1

Place the bicycle in the workstand. Open the brake calipers and levers. If using disc-brakes, push the caliper lever to the open position to release the mechanism -- this is a small metal bar at the outer edge of the brakes.

    • 2

Slide the Mavic carbon wheel into the fork mount brackets -- the fletches on the side of each tire fork tine. Align the brake pads, or if it is a mountain bike, get the brake pad aligned into the calipers.

    • 3

Turn the Mavic wheel quick release -- the lever in the center of the wheel -- to the right to tighten the wheel into the mount.

    • 4

Close the brakes. Turn the brake adjuster barrel on the shifter one-quarter turn to the left until the brake it adjusted to your desired setting.

    Rear Wheels

    • 5

Screw the cassette gearing cluster into the center cassette mount on the right hand side of the rear Mavic tire. Open the rear brakes.

    • 6

Slide the rear wheel up and into the frame mounts. Pull down on the rear derailleur to position the chain so it will go over the cassette gearing. Push and guide the chain onto the cassette. Turn the Mavic tire quick release lever in the center of the wheel to the right so it secures the wheel into the bicycle.

    • 7

Turn the pedals of the bicycle so the chain will move through the cassette gears. Shift the gears to get the chain onto the largest cassette gear. Close the brake.

    • 8

Turn the brake barrel adjuster on the handlebar's shifter pod one-quarter turn to the left until you reach your desired brake setting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mavic wheels come with the spokes installed. Use a spoke wrench to adjust spokes that have gone out of true.
