Prismacolor Markers Tutorial

Prismacolor Markers Tutorial thumbnail
Prismacolor markers provide richer color than most brands.

Prismacolor double-ended markers are widely used among serious graphic designers and hobbyists alike. The markers are richly saturated with high-pigment ink, which provides smooth and consistent color, and the chiseled and fine tips allow artists to easily change the width of their lines. Though Prismacolor markers are non-toxic, they are much more expensive than drugstore markers, and also require thicker, more expensive paper to prevent the ink from bleeding and running. For this reason, Prismacolor markers are more appropriate for serious artists than children at play.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a small selection of Prismacolor markers to get started. Since they are so expensive, it's best to start out with a set of grays and a few neutral tones. You can add more colors as you hone your skills.

    • 2

Lightly sketch a preliminary drawing on your paper with a pencil.

    • 3

Ink your drawing with the fine end of a black marker. Vary the width of your line in strategic places by applying light pressure as you draw.

    • 4

Allow the black ink to dry, then erase your pencil sketch.

    • 5

Block in large, flat areas of color with the chisel end of your marker, drawing with a circular motion. Let these big areas of color dry before proceeding.

    • 6

Layer over your first coat with the same colored markers in the areas where you want shadow. Use a white colored pencil to add highlights.

    • 7

Use the fine side of your marker to add details. Use this end sparingly, however, as it wears out more easily than the other end.
