How to Replace an HP Laser Cartridge

HP's desktop inkjet printers usually contain small ink cartridges that slide in and out of a printer's cartridge slot without much hassle. Replacing laser cartridges in an HP printer, however, can seem a little more complicated, especially if you are used to dealing with inkjets. Though the cartridges may be bigger and require a little more prep work, however, the replacement process for a laser cartridge is virtually the same as for an inkjet, though the laser cartridge for a black printer usually has a different changing process than that for a color printer.

Lift the ink cartridge cover on the top of the printer. To lift the cover, find the small groove in the front center right by the paper rest and pull upward to release it from the rest of the unit. Push the cover back all the way until it stands on its own. Clasp the handle that faces up on the print cartridge and pull it straight up and out of the printer.

    • 2

Open the packaging of the new cartridge and pull the cartridge out of the package. The HP website recommends holding the cartridge at both ends to prevent damage.

    • 3

Pull the tab that holds the strip of tape on the cartridge until the tape is completely removed from the cartridge. Still holding the cartridge by both ends, tilt the cartridge toward you and away from you to distribute the ink.

    • 4

Insert the new cartridge into the printer by taking it by the handle and sliding it into the cartridge slot in the printer. Push down on the cartridge gently until it clicks into place.

Open the door on the top or the front of the HP laser printer. If the door is on top, move it back until it stands on its own to reveal the cartridges. If the door is on the front, take the handle revealed when the door is opened and pull it toward you to pull out the cartridge tray. Take the handle of the color cartridge you want to remove from the tray and pull upward to slide it out of the cartridge slot.

    • 6

Remove the new color cartridge from the packaging, holding it at both ends. Gently tilt the cartridge backward and forward to distribute the ink inside it.

    • 7

Grasp the orange plastic cover on the new cartridge on both sides and pull away from the cartridge to remove the plastic from the cartridge. Be careful not to touch the green toner drum.

    • 8

Hold the new cartridge by the handle, so that the green drum faces in toward the cartridge tray, and insert the new cartridge into the slot. Push until the cartridge clicks into place.

    • 9

Pull the tab on the side of the cartridge to peel off the protective tape once the cartridge is securely seated in the slot. Close the cartridge drawer.
