Downloading is a huge part of the Internet experience. Everything from computer updates, new programs, music, movies and other media are attained through download transfers. Having a high-speed internet connection sometimes isn't enough to download items as fast as we want them. Large portions of advertised bandwidth are taken up by just connecting to servers and maintaining these connections. There are several ways that you can increase download transfer rates.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your computer directly to the modem through an Ethernet port with an Ethernet cable. Some modems allow you to connect through a USB port, but Ethernet is the faster connection. Also, if you are using a laptop, connect directly to the modem instead of using wireless access; the connection will be stronger.

Close other programs that your computer is running. Your computer's RAM (random access memory) also factors into the speed of the Internet connection; if your computer is bogged down running other programs, the connection speed will suffer.

    • 3

Use an open-source browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. These are fast browsers that are not encumbered by extensions. You have the option of adding extensions, but if speed is the goal, it's best to keep the default settings.

Call your Internet service provider and upgrade your service. This is a costly option for increasing download speeds, but if you are currently using a minimum or mid-grade plan, you can upgrade to a faster connection.
