How to Design a Cable & Pulley System
Cable and pulley systems change the direction of the lifting force, so that the weight of the object being lifted does not feel as heavy. There are three types of pulley systems: fixed pulleys, movable pulleys and combined pulley systems. The most common of these is the fixed pulley system. Implementing a pulley system can make the heavy lifting easier. However with any lifting, remember to never use your back to lift. This will help avoid a back injury. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Attach the pulley wheel to the ceiling or another sturdy surface that is high. This can include wooden beams, wall studs and rafters. When designing your cable and pulley system, it is important that there are as few obstructions around the pulley system as possible. A wooden beam with nothing around it would be ideal.

2
Loop the cable or rope over the top of the pulley wheel. Cut the cable or rope off at the point where each end touches the floor.

3
Tie the heavy weight hook securely to one end. You will need to use a secure hitch knot such as the buntline hitch. On the other end of the cable, use a figure eight knot to make a loop in the cable to put your hand through and pull on the pulley system.

4
Attach an object to the hook of the pulley system securely. Put your hand through the loop on the other end of the cable and pull until the object is picked up as far as you need it. Use your biceps, triceps, and chest muscles to pull on the pulley system, not your back.
