Plant your dahlias in a location that receives plenty of sun. Dahlias thrive in areas that receive full sun because its rays give them the essential nutrients they need. Without the sun, the flowers can lose their color.

Remove any dead buds from the dahlia as soon as you spot them.

Fertilize blue dahlias monthly with water soluble fertilizer. Use 2 lbs. of 5-10-10 or 10-10-10 fertilizer for every 100 square feet of garden area. Fertilize the dahlias through the middle of the season, then slack off as the season ends.

Test the pH of your soil to ensure that it has the adequate level. Dahlias grow best in soil that has a pH between 6.5 and 7. Collect a small sample of your soil and take it to your local extension for testing. Adjust the pH levels if necessary.
