How to Map a Drive to an Alias

How to Map a Drive to an Alias thumbnail
You can set up an alias for a mapped network drive on your Mac computer.

In the Mac OS X operating system, Apple computer users can connect to shared data on Windows or Mac servers using the Finder program. As long as you know the address of the server you want to access, you can map a network drive to the shared data. After that, to make it easier to access the server in the future, you can set up an alias to the network drive, which functions just like a shortcut in Windows.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the "Finder" icon in the Dock at the bottom of your screen.

    • 2

Open the "Go" menu at the top of the screen and choose the "Connect to Server" option.

    • 3

Type "smb://" into the "Server Address" field at the top of the pop-up window followed by the address or hostname of the server you want to access.

    • 4

Press the "Connect" button to initiate the connection with the remote server.

    • 5

Highlight one of the folders in the network drive you just mapped.

    • 6

Go to the "File" menu at the top of the screen and select "Make Alias." The Finder will now create a shortcut to the network drive, which you can move to your desktop to make it easier to access the server in the future.
