How to Untangle Jewelry Chains

Even jewelry chains mixed with pearls can become knotted.

Every woman dreads opening her jewelry box and finding her favorite delicate chain snarled in a tangled knot. The tossing and turning of an overcrowded jewelry box leaves chains knotted just like ribbon and string. Fortunately, untangling the thin gold chain on your pearl pendant or bracelet is much easier than untangling ribbon or thread. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Spread your tangled necklace on a flat surface. Untangling a metal chain is much easier when the ends are on the same level surface rather than slipping through your fingers.

    • 2

Undo the clasp. Having both ends free will make untangling the individual parts of the chain easier. If possible, set the unclasped ends on opposite sides as a starting point.

    • 3

Massage a pea-size amount of baby oil into the tangled sections of the jewelry piece. The oil acts as a lubricant, making untangling the chain easier.

    • 4

Stick the safety pin into the loosest part of the tangle and gently pull outward. Work the knot by separating each of the individual tangles with the safety pin. Always begin with the easiest part before moving on to the more knotted sections.

    • 5

Stop and massage the chain with more baby oil if the tangle becomes too difficult to separate. Rubbing the knotted areas of the chain with oil will move the links against each other and loosen the tangle. Slowly but surely, the chain will become untangled.

Tips & Warnings

  • To prevent further tangling, hang your jewelry on the inside of a box or wrap it around a paper clip to prevent the mashing and overlapping that leads to chain knotting.

  • Avoid pulling too hard or too quickly on the chain. Untangling anything is a feat of patience, not strength.
