Step-by-Step Guide on How to Use Crutches

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Use Crutches thumbnail
Crutches can be challenging to use if you have a heavy cast.

Using crutches after an accident or surgery can be challenging, particularly if you're already struggling with a heavy cast or have never used crutches before. However, with a little hard work and practice, you will be getting around just fine with your crutches. Just remember to make sure you have crutches that are appropriate for your size and to take it slow when working toward regaining your mobility.

Instructions

    • 1

Position your crutches so that the top of your crutch (the "crutch pad") is 1 1/2 to 2 inches from the bottom of your armpit. Check that your hand grips are even with your hips.

    • 2

Press the crutches firmly into your sides. Use your hands not your armpits to take the majority of your weight.

    • 3

Place the tips of the crutches between 6 and 12 inches in front of your feet and lean forward slightly.

    • 4

Shift your body weight as if you were about to step on your injured foot, but take the weight into the crutches instead. Allow your body to swing forward between the crutches.

    • 5

Finish the step forward by putting your weight onto your non-injured foot, as you would when walking normally.

    • 6

Reposition the crutches between 6 and 12 inches in front of you, and prepare to the repeat the series of movements.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask your doctor to help you find crutches that are the appropriate size for you.

  • Always make sure the area in which you're walking with crutches has been cleared of potentially dangerous objects that might trip you.

  • If using crutches causes more pain in your injured limb, stop using them immediately and contact your doctor.
