There are 33 adult prisons within the state of California.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) houses more than 300,000 inmates within its facilities which includes the prisons and camps. You can find the location of an inmate in a CDCR prison using the Inmate Locator online tool. The tool is provided by the CDCR. You can also obtain additional information about an inmate such as age, date of admission and a map to the prison.

      Access the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation website. Select "Prisons" from the top menu and click "Inmate Locator" in the drop-down menu.

      Read and accept the disclaimer by clicking "Agree."

      Search by entering either the inmate's ID number or first and last name in the appropriate fields. The ID number is used to identify the inmate within the system. If you do not know the number, search using the name. Click "Search."

      Review the search results and locate the inmate's name in the results. The location in which the inmate is incarcerated is in the "Current Location" column. You can obtain directions to the facility by clicking "Directions" in the "Map Link" column.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also obtain the location of an inmate in a California prison by calling the ID & Warrants line at 916-445-6713. Be prepared to give the inmate's name or ID number.
