How to Install a Honeywell Steam Humidifier

How to Install a Honeywell Steam Humidifier thumbnail
Properly installed humidifiers help families breathe easier.

The Honeywell Steam Humidifier eliminates the effects of dry air in a home, such as chapped lips, dry skin, nasal irritation and static cling. It also creates a humidity level beneficial to musical instruments, house plants and hardwood floors. Whole-house humidifiers, such as the Honeywell, tap directly into existing water lines and ductwork, and eliminate the need for daily refilling. The Honeywell Steam Humidifier can be installed directly on the supply duct or at a remote location, using a separately purchased remote location installation kit. Both locations require the same plumbing and wiring installation. Does this Spark an idea?

  • 1 3/4-inch hole cutter or step bit
  • 1/8-inch drill bit

Instructions

  1. Direct Installation

    • 1

Locate a place to install the Honeywell Steam Humidifier directly onto the supply duct. The location must contain a drain, a cold water supply line and an electrical circuit at a voltage compatible with your unit.

    • 2

Attach the steam humidifier mounting template to the supply duct where the Honeywell will be installed. Remove the backing, level the template using a level and the leveling line, and press the self-adhesive back to the duct.

    • 3

Cut the 1 3/4-inch hole out of the template and duct, using a drill with a hole cutter or step bit.

    • 4

Align the mounting bracket to the mounting template. Attach it to the duct with the four included No. 8 screws.

    • 5

Remove the cover from the steam injection nozzle. Insert the nozzle into the fitted hole in the condensate collection dome, a round black ball in the upper rear of the Honeywell unit. Turn the nozzle clockwise to secure it. Inspect the gasket for a proper seal. Place the foam gasket over the nozzle protruding from the rear of the Honeywell Steam Humidifier.

    • 6

Position the Honeywell Steam Humidifier on the bracket, inserting the foam-covered steam nozzle into the hole cut earlier. Press down on the unit to engage the brackets. Inspect the foam gasket seal for air-tightness where the steam nozzle enters the duct unit. Continue with the plumbing and electrical guide.

    Remote Installation

    • 7

Find a mounting location that can bear 12 to 15 lbs. and is lower than the location where the injector nozzle meets the supply duct. It will need to be within 10 to 20 feet from the supply duct, depending on the length of hose in your remote mounting accessory kit. It will also require access to a drain, a cold-water supply line and an electrical circuit at a voltage compatible with your unit. See the instructions included with your remote mounting accessory kit for further location considerations.

    • 8

Use screws or wall anchors to securely attach the mounting bracket to the wall or studs.

    • 9

Insert the remote humidifier nozzle into the hole on the condensate collection dome, the black ball on the upper rear of the unit. Turn the nozzle clockwise to secure it tightly. Secure the remote steam tubing to the remote humidifier nozzle by pushing it onto the nozzle.

    • 10

Align the Honeywell unit with the wall bracket arms. Press down on the unit to secure it to the wall.

    • 11

Cut a 1 3/4-inch hole out of the supply duct using a drill fitted with a hole cutter or step bit. Insert the remote nozzle into the hole. Drill the enclosed sheet metal screws into the duct to secure the nozzle. Attach the remote steam hose to the nozzle. Drill the same 1 3/4-inch holes through any other walls or structural surfaces needed for the steam tube to reach the supply duct. Try to maintain an upward slant of two inches incline per foot of tubing. Secure the tubing to the wall with the included clamps. Continue with the plumbing and wiring guide.

    Plumbing and Wiring

    • 12

Turn the cold water supply off.

    • 13

Connect the 1/4-inch water supply line to the inlet water port, securing it by tightening the clamp. Insert the line into the included filter if you wish to use it, and continue another line out of the filter and attach it to the included saddle valve. Clamp the saddle valve onto the house's water supply line. Ensure a secure fit. Tighten the pin until the saddle valve pierces the water line. Turn the pin in the opposite direction to remove it from the line and allow water flow. Check for leaks.

    • 14

Slide the 3/4-inch drain tube over the drain valve immediately below the intake valve. Direct the drain valve downward toward a drain or into a condensate pump.

    • 15

Unscrew and remove the Honeywell cover to access the wiring. Consult the unit directions to determine the terminal needs for your Honeywell Steam Humidifier. Wire it according to the manual chart that matches your humidity control requirements. Strip the wire ends. Insert the wires into the Honeywell by pushing them into the wire terminals. To release the wires, press the release buttons and pull the wires out.

    • 16

Screw the Honeywell cover back in place. Turn the cold water supply on and plug in the Honeywell unit. Press the "On" button and set to "Test." Allow the unit to run for 15 minutes. Check all water lines for leaks.
