It is important to understand how to properly recycle mineral oil in order for it to be used in other products we use everyday.

It is important to understand how to recycle all types of oil, including mineral oil. Mineral oil is a byproduct of petroleum production. It is also known as "paraffin oil" and, once it is recycled, is re-used in make-up removal products, baby oil and in the creation of clay pots. It is critical to properly recycle mineral oil so that it can be re-used in these products and processes.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect the mineral oil in either solid plastic containers or in metal drums. In order for the oil to be fully recyclable, all dirt, solvents, water or other impurities should be removed before placing it in the container. If you are unsure whether you have a container that is suitable for recycling mineral oil or if you are not sure that you have properly removed all impurities from the oil, contact your state's environmental protection agency office to inquire.

    • 2

Find a recycling facility that takes mineral oil. There are numerous ways to find a recycling facility, but common methods include calling local gas stations that do oil changes, auto repair shops and/or the local trash company. Be sure to ask whether they have restrictions on the type of container in which the mineral oil must be collected before they will recycle it.

    • 3

Transport the mineral oil to a recycling facility. Sometimes a company that recycles mineral oil will pick up the containers from you. If you cannot locate a company that will pick up the oil, you will have to transport it yourself. Before you relocate the oil yourself, contact your state's environmental protection agency to make sure you properly comply with all state and federal laws regarding the movement of mineral oil in a vehicle.
