How to Change Hybrid Batteries
Hybrid car batteries can cost thousands of dollars. The good news is, the hybrid battery that comes equipped in a vehicle will likely last the lifetime of the vehicle itself. In the event that a hybrid car batter does require replacement, it is best to leave this task to a professional. Most states have strict regulations regarding hazardous or potentially dangerous materials, requiring certain measures for disposal of the battery pack. If you change the battery yourself you should make arrangements for proper disposal of the old battery.

Consult the owner's manual for detailed instructions on how to replace the battery. More than 20 hybrid vehicle models are on the market. The way batteries are housed within each model will differ slightly.

Locate the battery. Depending on the model, the hybrid battery may be either in the front or rear of the vehicle.

Disconnect all wires, plugs and cables that connect the battery to the engine. Remember where each of the wires runs. Depending on the make and model, it may also be necessary to remove a housing bolt keeping the battery in its place. If so, use a ratchet wrench to unbolt it.

Remove the old hybrid battery from the car. Once disconnected, you should be able to lift the battery out with relative ease. Place the old battery on a stable surface where it will be undisturbed until it can be picked up or properly disposed of.

Follow the detailed instructions as described in the car's manual to install the new hybrid battery. Place the battery in the housing unit carefully, being sure not to snag any of the plugs or cables. If necessary, tighten any bolts using a ratchet wrench to ensure the battery is locked firmly into place. Reattach all wires, cables and plugs in the exact manner that they were attached to the old battery.

Start the vehicle's engine and ensure that installation of the new hybrid battery was successful.
