How to Use Foam Ear Plugs thumbnail
Enjoy a quiet airplane flight by using foam earplugs.

An earplug inserts into the ear and protects the ears against elements such as wind, water and loud noises. Earplugs are available at any drug or grocery store. Foam earplugs collect earwax buildup and bacteria, so throw them away after two or three uses to prevent ear infections. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the inside ridges of your ear and edge of your ear canal with the cotton swabs. Take extra care to not enter the ear canal with the cotton swab. If the cotton swab goes too deep in the ear canal, this sensitive area can be damaged and can cause hearing loss.

    • 2

Examine the foam earplug and check that it is clean and debris-free.

    • 3

Roll the earplug between both of your hands or two of your fingers into a thin strip.

    • 4

Gently pull up the top of your ear to straighten the ear canal.

    • 5

Insert one earplug directly into the ear. Press the foam to fit inside the ear canal. A small amount of the earplug should be sticking out of the ear canal to make it easier to remove.

    • 6

Insert the second earplug into the other ear using the same method.

    • 7

Remove both earplugs when you are finished with use. Clean them with a tissue and remove any wax buildup. Place them in a plastic bag for storage. Foam ear plugs can be used again or thrown away after one use. As long as they are clean and no debris or bacteria is being introduced to the ear, they can be reused.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can buy foam earplugs from a drugstore. If you plan to wear them for continual use, buy a box containing a few sets. If you plan to use your earplugs for one event only such as a long flight or a concert, then one set is enough.
