How to Check the Toe Wheel Alignment

How to Check the Toe Wheel Alignment thumbnail
Proper tire alignment is essential to avoid unnecessary tire wear.

Wheel alignment is hindered when steering and suspension systems are not operating at appropriate angles. Incorrect alignment results in faster tire tread wear. It is important to check alignment at regular intervals to avoid unnecessary wear. A good rule of thumb is to check tire alignment each time an oil change is performed. The alignment process includes several calculations. An important calculation performed during the alignment process is toe. This is a measurement that involves the tires of the vehicle.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the vehicle on a level surface, ensuring that the steering wheel is centered and the tires are straight.

    • 2

Insert a stick pin into the tread of each front tire approximately 6 inches above the ground. Try to place the pins at an identical location on each tire.

    • 3

Extend the tape measure, with the help of a friend, from one pin to the other pin. Hold the tape measure against the tire for a more accurate measurement. Record the measurement.

    • 4

Start the car and back up the car slowly until the pins are approximately 6 inches above the ground on the back side of the tire. Do not roll forward because you will run over the pins. Ask a friend to watch the pins as you back up so you will know when to stop.

    • 5

Measure the distance between the pins again. Record the measurement. The difference between the two measurements is the amount of toe wheel alignment.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of sewing pins, chalk can be used to perform the measurements.
