How to Donate Cars in Tampa
If you don't have time to sell your old car yourself, or if you've got a beater car, donation is a convenient way to get rid of the car. Help support veterans living in the Tampa Bay area, fund public radio programs or get food and medical care for shelter animals by donating your car to a local charity. You'll get money in your pocket via a tax donation as long as the organization is 501(c)3 certified.

1
Brainstorm the type of charity that's important to you. The Tampa area has many local programs that accept car donations, and there are national programs that pick up in the area as well. Local donation options include Tampa's public radio station (WUSF), the Humane Society and the Tampa-based Florida Gulf Coast Paralyzed Veterans of America. For national programs, both Habitat for Humanity and the Purple Heart Car Donation (which supports veterans) pick up cars in the area.

Contact the fundraising or customer service division of the charity you've chosen and let someone know that you want to donate your vehicle. Ask what you need to do to prepare the vehicle for donation. Most places will require you to have a car title in your name and car keys. Find out where to fill out the car donation form, typically on the organization's website or an affiliate website.

3
Complete the car donation form. Enter in your personal information and general info on the car's condition. You'll need to include the car's VIN number, the mileage count and information about the car's condition (such as whether it runs or where it has cosmetic damage). Send in the form when you're finished.

4
Set a time to send off the car once someone from the tow company calls you. You won't need to pay for the tow (the charity does this).
-
5
Gather your keys and your car title on the day of the tow. Meet the tow company representative and hand over these items, along with your car. Once the charity processes the car donation (typically, they'll sell the vehicle at an auction), they'll send you a tax receipt showing you how much you can claim for your donation.
