How to Fix a Flashing Red Light on a Wireless Network Adapter

A wireless network adapter is a device that receives an Internet signal and then routes it wirelessly to any devices that are within range of connecting to it. If you have an adapter like this in your home, you will be familiar with the dazzling array of lights that blink into life when it is working or booting up. You may also have noticed that occasionally there is a persistent flashing or blinking red light that doesn't cease, even when your adapter is not performing any tasks. There are a few simple things you can try to correct this.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the adapter from any devices it is connected to and from the power source. Wait for all of the lights on the adapter to go dark.

    • 2

Reconnect the power to the adapter, followed by each of the devices one at a time. The flashing light may have resulted from a failure during diagnostic checks at startup, so resetting the device may correct the problem.

    • 3

Wait five minutes for the lights to stop blinking in accordance with the diagnostic check. If the red light is still flashing, try the next fix.

    • 4

Move the adapter to a better source of reception. Being next to thick walls or other reception-blocking impediments can prevent the adapter from making a strong connection and result in a flashing light.

    • 5

Let the adapter try to reconnect after it is moved to a new location. If the problem persists, you have either a connectivity or hardware problem.

Tips & Warnings

  • Connection problems can be handled through your Internet service provider. The maker of your device manages hardware defects.

  • Do not attempt to connect to the adapter while all of the lights are running, because you will not get service.
