How to Install a Muffler on an E46 M3
Many consider the BMW M3 to be one of the most balanced and well-rounded sports cars available. Offered since the late 1980s, the E46 M3 is the generation of the car produced between 2001 and 2006. Installation of an aftermarket exhaust on the E46 M3 is a commonplace procedure. Many buyers elect to purchase and install a louder or more free-flowing exhaust to give the car an aggressive sound and increase engine performance.
Things You'll Need
- Flat head screwdriver
- Socket wrench
- 13 mm socket
- 12 mm socket
- 12 mm open-end wrench
- 13 mm open-end wrench

Pry off the six pins that secure the rear diffuser to the rear bumper with a flat head screwdriver. Pull out the rear diffuser after you've removed the screws.

Locate the pipe connections that go into the M3's muffler and remove the bolts with a 13 mm open-end wrench and a 13 mm socket wrench.

Use a 12 mm socket wrench to remove the nuts that secure the exhaust hangers to the body of the M3.

Pull the exhaust down and push it towards the rear of the car to remove it. This will require significant force so be aware of the exhaust's weight if it suddenly slides out of place.

Transfer the exhaust hangers from the stock muffler to the replacement muffler.

Position the exhaust below its installation point and attach the exhaust hangers to the body of the car.

Reattach the exhaust pipes to the muffler with the 13 mm open-end wrench and 13 mm socket wrench.

Slide the rear diffuser into the rear bumper and insert then tighten each of the six securing screws into the diffuser to secure it to the bumper.
