Whether you are selling, sending or exchanging items that you cannot deliver in person, you can calculate in advance a company's approximate shipping time to do the job. Depending on costs and locations, shipping times can vary no matter what season of the year it is. Calculating a shipping time can be done by telephone or by visiting the company in person, but also on-line through your chosen shipping method's website.

Package the item and weigh it. Shipping companies need accurate package weight information to classify how the item will be transported and its approximate delivery time.

Choose a shipping company. Most companies' websites include pages that calculate costs and shipping time. For example, the United States Postal Service's postage calculation page includes the average delivery shipping time of items in different price classes. Special accommodations in terms of cost and delivery time may be necessary if you are shipping outside of the United States.

Input information onto the company's calculation webpage; where you are shipping from and to, how many packages, their weight and dimensions and anything else that may be required. Include zip codes on your packages. View the estimated transit time and shipping cost.

Some companies do not ship to post office boxes. Shipping times are considered approximate, unless otherwise noted. Companies may recommend that holiday items be shipped by certain dates to assure prompt delivery; check with your preferred provider for specific guidelines.
