How to Register a Domain Name With an EDU Extension

The .edu extension (or suffix) signifies a domain belonging to an institution of higher learning.

An Internet domain with a .edu extension signifies that the domain holder is a degree-granting institution of higher learning, primarily in the United States. Domains with an .edu extension identify an institution by name and not by a generic word or phrase. Information found on the websites of .edu-domain holders is considered to be authoritative and balanced, free of commercial or partisan influences. Registration of domains with .edu extensions is handled exclusively by Educause, a nonprofit association.

Instructions

1. Confirm that your educational institution is accredited by one of the agencies on the U.S. Department of Education's list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies.

2. Gather the names and contact information of your institution's administrative, technical and billing contacts for the domain registration. Select a password that you will use to manage your domain after it is registered. You will also need to know the host names of the Domain Name System (DNS) servers that will be supporting you new domain.

3. Visit the Educause website to and click the "Request A New Domain" entry on the site's main menu.

4. Enter the domain name you wish to use and click the "Check Domain" button to confirm your choice is available. If the domain name if currently not used, you can proceed to step 5. Otherwise, you may have to reconsider your naming preferences.

5. Provide the institution name, contact details and DNS information requested in the subsequent screens, then pay for the domain with a credit card. You have now successfully registered a domain with an .edu extension.
