DIY: Breaker Bar

A breaker bar is an extension that goes onto the end of a socket or wrench to create more leverage when using a tool. This can be very useful when dealing with stubborn nuts and bolts, and allows you to create more force than you could without such a bar. With an old metal pipe and a few hand tools, you can make your own breaker bars that are custom sized for any application you need.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Find a section of metal pipe with an internal diameter large enough to fit over the wrench or socket for which you need an extension. Insert the tool into the pipe to make sure it will fit inside fairly snugly.

    • 2

Measure out the length that you wish the breaker bar to be. Make a mark on the pipe to designate a saw line where the pipe will be cut.

    • 3

Saw the pipe on the cut line using a metal handsaw or power saw.

    • 4

File down the sharp edges from both ends of the pipe section you just cut. Make sure to file the inside and outside of the pipe ends to ensure there are no sharp edges. You may also use sandpaper for this process. Slip the pipe over your wrench or socket.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your pipe fits too loosely over your wrench or socket it may slip, so try and find a pipe that fits well over your tool.

  • Always use proper safety equipment such as safety goggles and gloves when working with metal and power tools.
